PRAYER TUTORIAL

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love you have for all the saints.”  (Eph. 1:3,4)

“Praying Scripture”

Paul begins many, if not most, of his prayers with thanks.  Again and again he tells the recipients of his letters that he thanks God for them.  We can follow Paul’s example in our prayers of intercession for the family of God, beginning with thanksgiving for their faith.  Here are some additional Scripture passages that we can use in our intercessions.

1.      Ask God to fill them with the knowledge of His will. (Col. 1:9)

2.      Ask God to give them spiritual wisdom and understanding.  (Col. 1:9)

3.      Ask God to help them live a life worthy of the Lord.  (Col. 1:10)

4.      Ask God to make them pleasing to Him in every way. (Col. 1:10)

5.      Ask God to help them grow in their knowledge of God.  (Col. 1:10)

6.      Ask God to make their lives fruitful in good works.  (Col. 1:10)

7.      Ask God to strengthen them with His mighty power, that they may have great endurance and patience.  (Col. 1:11)

Examples:

1.      When interceding for those who are at a decision point, pray that God will fill them with the knowledge of His will.  This is an especially apt prayer for our young people!

2.      When praying for those who counsel and those who are in a pastoral position, ask God to give them spiritual wisdom and understanding.  This is an excellent intercession for doctors, priests, deacons and teachers.

3.      When praying for those who are new to the faith, ask God to help them grow in their knowledge of God.

4.      When praying for the leaders of our church, our Diocese and our communion, in this time of testing, ask God to strengthen them with His mighty power, that they may have the endurance and patience needed for their tasks.
