“Praying
Scripture”
Many
Christian traditions have recommended using the words of Scripture for our
private prayers. Here
are some suggestions and examples of ways to “pray Scripture.”
1.
Prayers
for other Christians. Paul
begins many of his epistles (his letters to the churches) with a prayer. In the
first chapter of Ephesians he says, “I have not stopped giving thanks for
you, remembering you in my prayers.”
(Eph. 1:16 NIV) Then he
continues with the specifics of his prayers for the Ephesians.
a.
That God
will give them a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that they may know Him
better (Eph. 1:17 NIV)
b.
That the
eyes of their hearts will be enlightened. (Eph. 1:18 NIV)
c.
That
they will know the hope to which God has called them. (Eph. 1:18 NIV)
d.
That
they will know the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints. (Eph.
1:18 NIV)
e.
That
they will know His incomparably great power for us who believe. (Eph. 1:19 NIV)
2.
Prayers
for the clergy and church leaders.
Paul also includes his list of prayer requests in many of his
letters.
a.
He longs
to see the believers in Rome, so that he can give them some spiritual gift,
to make them strong. (Rom.
1:11)
b.
He asks
the Colossian Christians to pray that God will open a door for his message
(the Gospel of Jesus Christ). (Col.
4:3 NIV)
c.
He asks
for prayer, so he will proclaim the gospel clearly. (Col. 4:4)
Examples:
1.
Heavenly
Father, I pray for Bill - give him a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so
that he may know You better.
2.
Heavenly
Father, I pray for Candice - that she will know Your incomparably great
power for her as a believer.
3.
Heavenly
Father, I pray for Fr. John – that he will give us a spiritual gift, to
make us strong, as he preaches next Sunday.
4.
Heavenly
Father, I pray for Bishop Ackerman - open doors for his message (the Gospel
of Jesus Christ) and enable him to proclaim his message clearly and with
boldness.
