TUTORIAL
“The
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (is) the Father of compassion and
the God of all comfort.” 2
Cor. 1:3
“Praying
Scripture”
How
do we pray for those who are suffering hardship and for those who
grieve? Paul’s life was one of
great joy in the midst of great hardship and suffering. In 2 Corinthians chapter 11, Paul
enumerates some of his hardships:
·
“I have
been in prison.”
·
“I have
been flogged.”
·
“I have
been exposed to death again and again.”
·
“Five times
I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one.”
·
“Three
times I was beaten with rods.”
·
“Once I
was stoned.”
·
“Three
times I have been shipwrecked.”
·
“I spent
a night and a day on the open sea.”
·
“I have
been constantly on the move.”
·
“I have
often gone without sleep.”
·
“I have
known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food.”
·
“I have
been cold and naked.”
This
is the same man who says, “(God) comforts us in all our troubles, so that
we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have
received from God.”
He
also says, “this (trouble) happened that we might not rely on ourselves but
on God.” And “On Him we have
set our hope that He will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your
prayers. Then many will give
thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the
prayers of many.”
Here
are some suggestions for prayer for those who are suffering hardship and
grief:
·
Pray
that they will know God as the Father of all compassion and the God of all
comfort.
·
Pray that
God will give them an opportunity to comfort others with the comfort they
have received from God.
·
Pray
that they will rely on God in their trouble.
·
Pray
that they will set their hope on God.
·
Pray
that God will call other people to pray for them, so many can give thanks
on their behalf for the gracious favor granted them in answer to the
prayers of many.
